Abstract

Race and Ethnicity Assignment Race can be defined as a term that considers physical differences that some cultures and groups consider socially significant. It is a term that groups’ people based on their physical characteristics like skin color, hair color, among other cultural attributes. Since race concentrates so much on human physical aspects, the group tends to be so broad; this is further broken down through consideration of ethnicity. Ethnicity is a great term that pays little to no attention to physical attributes while defining an individual's identity. Race is defined as a term primarily characterized by a shared culture and linguistic (Espinosa et al., 2019). For this reason, an ethnic group can be defined as a group whose identity is based on a common language, genetic similarities, and similar origin. Though race and ethnicity are always thought of as having the same meaning, it becomes quite clear the two terms differ based on their characteristics. The fact that race and ethnicity enhance human beings' identification does not mean that the two terms are not separate. On the contrary, race, and ethnicity differ in terms of attributes that each categorization employs while grouping its standard members. Unlike ethnicity, which narrowly split broad racial groups into ethnic groups, race focuses on grouping people based on their skin and hair color, which serves as the primary identifier of groups within a racial segment. On the other hand, ethnicity comes in and further split the people within one race based on their origin, language, religion, traditions, and beliefs, among other cultural attributes that define an individual's inner being (Espinosa et al., 2019).
