Walmart is an American International retail corporation with the majority of the shareholding being the Walton family. The company through innovation enables its customers to shop in its stores and online. It is the world’s biggest retailer aimed at the elimination of poverty and selling its services at low costs. Walmart strives to expand internationally to gain a competitive advantage. It has announced its plan to expand its services in Egypt, a country in the northeast of Africa. Egypt boasts a population of 118. 8 million as of January 2023 (Digital 2023: Egypt, n.d). To ensure that the expansion is successful Walmart must study Egypt’s political, cultural, and economic environments.
Egypt describes itself as a republic with a semi-presidential system of governance comprising the president and the prime minister. Egypt experienced political instability after the 2011 revolution but the environment has since changed under the leadership of President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi who ascended to power in 2014 to bring development and a conducive environment for investors. Walmart has a high chance of investing in the politically stable environment now and it is up to them to comply with the government and the existing laws and regulations. Egyptians have an intense and rich culture characterized by family values, communalism, and hospitality.
