Abstract

Okot et al. (2021) investigated the adoption of Industry 4.0 technologies in Costa Rica with the goal of comparing the country with other regions to identify potential opportunities. Upscaling the use of modern technologies, including big data and AI, would facilitate giving the country an economic advantage in the region and globally. The methodology of the study was a descriptive research that implemented a mixed method approach by combining quantitative and qualitative data. Secondary data from research on industry 4.0 technologies in Costa Rica provided the landscape of the IoT in the country and the region. Through an exploratory investigation, quantitative and qualitative data was collected to determine the strengths and weaknesses in technology adoption in Costa Rica. Assessments included the readiness for technology adoption, implementation strategies, self-assessment, and maturity indicators. The findings revealed that strong education and expedited implementation were core strengths while potential weaknesses included lack of investments in research and stagnant urban development. Opportunities of technology adoption were natural resources and growth in small cities while potential threats were reluctance to change and roadblocks in using new technologies. The results indicate that IoT has the potential to enhance business development in Costa Rica and increase the profitability of organizations. In conclusion, entrepreneurs have the potential to lead the implementation of new technologies through viable opportunities for their organizations. Investments in technology for businesses in Costa Rica are feasible especially when implemented at the local business level. By determining the impact of technology on facilitating or impending measures to achieve sustainable development, the study shows how future trends will affect practices in organizations. The data for this study was from the GEM database and consisted of 26,790 entrepreneurs from 47 countries. Participants were representative of the age and gender dynamics of selected countries, and they responded to the survey through face-to-face or telephone. They indicated if they intended to engage in more use of digital technologies in their business over the next six months compared to the past six months. The study examined variations in responses with age, gender, and the participants’ level of education. Regions were Latin America and the Caribbean, Asia, Middle East, and Europe and North America. The study employed a multinomial regression analysis to measure the probability of an entrepreneur taking considerations of the effects of their business strategy on the social and environmental implications of the organization. The results indicated that businesses that intended to implement digitalization were likely to consider the sustainability outcomes of their practices. Intentions for digitalization increased the assessment of the social, environmental, or both aspects of the organization. Gender was not a significant factor while older entrepreneurs from Latin America and the Caribbean were the most likely to consider the social and environmental implications of their entrepreneurial plans. In conclusion, digitalization among entrepreneurs in Latin America and the Caribbean has a positive impact on the sustainability practices of businesses. Entrepreneurs in the region had the highest frequency of considering the social and environmental impacts of their business practices. Qureshi et al. (2021) compared the trends and determinants of innovation in the Asia and Pacific region and Latin America and the Caribbean. The hypothesis of the study is that there are variations in trends between the two regions and that there exist intra-regional similarities in innovation factors such as research and development spending and trademark flows. The study sourced data from the World Bank indicators, UNESCO, and the Atlas of Economic Complexity. Data was based on development indicators that showed trends in innovation and determinants of digital technologies in the two regions. The study compares differences and inequalities in the regions while examining indicators of intra-regional similarities in innovation. Using the sourced data on economic indicators, the study examines the role of individual countries in fueling innovation and the implications on regional trends in both Asia and Pacific region and Latin America and the Caribbean. The results indicate that there are significant regional innovation trends where high-income countries in both regions drive innovation. China, Singapore, and the Republic of Korea were the main drivers of innovation in Southern Asia. Chile, Mexico, Costa Rica, and Brazil played the greatest role in influencing the trends of innovation in the Latin America and the Caribbean region. The results of the study demonstrate that the Asia and Pacific region had an overall higher innovation in input and output indicators than Latin America and the Caribbean. In conclusion, there is significant intra-regional assortment in innovation in both Asia and Pacific and Latin America and the Caribbean where higher income countries are the key drivers. Innovation in the mostly middle-income regions plays a significant role in fueling productivity and growth. Research Problem Digital technologies have the potential to transform business and provide opportunities for increased performance across industries. The author describes 4.0 technologies as a vital driver to the global economy and a change that will transform economies. Determining the disruptive nature of the technologies, drivers, and challenges is critical to accommodating the changes they present in organizations. Studies around the globe have demonstrated significant benefits that the technologies present in organizations as well as barriers to their applications. The problem for the study is to fill the existing research gap by examining the adoption of 4.0 technologies in the Caribbean. c. Research Questions/Hypotheses The author does not explicitly indicate the research question and hypothesis. The article describes the role of technologies in causing disruptions in businesses and the significant role that 4.0 technologies have in the workplace today. According to the author, there is limited evidence of the use of the technologies in Latin America and the Caribbean in literature. The article shows that the research question is how the technologies have been incorporated in businesses, existing challenges, and potential opportunities. II. Review of the Literature The review of literature begins with the recent changes in the use of 4.0 technologies in organizations and how COVID-19 contributed to this change. According to the literature, businesses have been forced to adapt to the changing economic environment and align their operations with changes in their relevant sectors. The author provides evidence from literature that the global business environment has changed significantly as a result of 4.0 technologies. Digitalization is a major factor affecting business operations as a result of 4.0 technologies and their application in the modern workplace. According to the literature provided in the article, digital transformations around the globe have changed operations and human roles in the modern workplace. 4.0 technologies are the most disruptive forces in the workplace and business environment world today. A major shift that 4.0 technologies cause in the workplace is the role of employees and the need for training in the workplace. The review or literature demonstrates that vocational trading is an important consideration for businesses as they adapt to the new work environment involving the application of technologies in the workplace. Businesses need to prepare their workforce for the disruptions that 4.0 technologies cause in the responsibilities of employees in the modern workplace. III. Methods The methodology for the study is multiple case study that used open and closed questions. The first block of the data collection instrument focused on the incorporation of new technologies in the workplace. The second block explores the investments and services that the new technologies incorporated in MSMEs. The third group explored how 4.0 technologies affected contracted services in businesses and the impact on operations in organizations. The sample for the study was 39 companies in the Caribbean with focus on the technologies and the economic activities to meet requirements for the research. The author shows that a total of 22 MSMEs were selected from the 39 companies for interviews which were completed by 18 of the respondents. Data analysis was done by factor analysis to determine key themes related to the research question on the adoption of 4.0 technologies. IV. Results and Conclusions The findings show that efficiency in organizations was a major motivation for the adoption of 4.0 technologies in organizations. According to the author, the motivations align with evidence from literature on businesses in other countries including Brazil and Colombia. Disruptive events such as hurricanes and pandemics influenced the adoption and type of technologies that companies implemented in organizations. Companies evaluated the need and applicability of technologies to their operations while considering internal and external factors of their business. Cost savings, digitizing, relationships with suppliers, and new customers’ interests were relevant but not main factors in the adoption of 4.0 technologies. The author provides a concise conclusion linking evidence from the current study to results from literature review on the adoption of 4.0 technologies in the Caribbean. The study shows that the technologies affect the performance of companies by increasing efficiency and effectiveness. The challenges observed in the study include regulation, accelerated industry changes, capital, lack of skilled labor, and instability of energy systems. The author demonstrates that by adopting new technologies, organizations seek to gain a competitive edge and ensure survival. According to the article, creating a collaborative environment among businesses and regulators and creating awareness could accelerate the adoption of 4.0 technologies in Caribbean MSMEs.
