Abstract

Course name Instructor’s name Assignment due date Neighborhood Disaster Response and Preparedness Plan for a Mega Tsunami Natural Disaster: Mega Tsunami Mega tsunamis are destructive waves that have the potential to cause significant immediate and long-term effects on coastal communities. While they are similar to regular tsunamis, they have a significantly greater potential to damage buildings, settlements, and infrastructure on affected areas. A mega tsunami reaching the United States coastline could cause violent flooding that could affect natural and manmade features in these regions. Mega tsunamis occur every few thousand years and the United States coastal communities could be affected by this destructive disaster in the next 500 years (QuakeAlerts, 2025). A mega tsunamic could occur if a massive rock slide generated an earthquake capable of causing waves that are hundreds of meters high. Additionally, it could result from submarine movements that cause mega earthquakes leading to displacement of large volumes of water. The scale of mega tsunamis is an issue of concern for communities living in areas vulnerable to these events. They can reach heights of hundreds or thousands of meters and travel for tens of kilometers inland at jet speed causing significant destruction. Determining how mega tsunamis occur and the extent of destruction they can cause would facilitate preparation and response to the disasters. Units from the class show how using evidence and scientific data can facilitate emergency preparedness and response during disasters. Physics is one of the units that apply to mega tsunamis and the unit shows how waves determine the causes the disasters could cause. Newton’s first law of motion states that an external force must act on an object to change its state of rest as observed in a mega tsunami. The water in the ocean will remain at a state of rest unless an earthquake, landslide, or volcanic eruption creates enough force to cause a mega tsunami (Geology.com, 2025). The force of the tsunami will depend on the mass and acceleration of the object causing the waves in the mega tsunami as indicated by Newton’s second law. The action-reaction in Newton’s third law is explained by the movement of the sea floor pushing water upwards which in turn moves downward and creates the waves observed in a mega tsunami. Force of gravity is responsible for facilitating the waves that occur during a mega tsunami and cause destruction on coastal neighborhoods. Gravity is the fundamental force that causes the attraction between rocks near water bodies or parts of the ocean floor and the earth causing the displacement of water. The rock fall that caused the Lituya Bay mega tsunami reaching 1720 feet was caused by the force of gravity leading to the displacement of water and flooding along the bay (Geology.com, 2025). Wave physics demonstrate how the movement of waves in water bodies over long distances causes the destruction observed during a mega tsunami. After large scale water displacement, the energy is transferred into waves that can travel for long distances on oceans before they are detected. Upon reaching coastal areas, the waves cause flooding and destructions that exceed that of regular tsunamis. The changes in wavelength and amplitude as the waves reaches the coastline causes the extent of damage in these events. As a mega tsunami approaches the show, the wavelength decreases and the amplitude or height increases leading to significant flooding and destruction. Connecting a mega tsunami to earth science concepts could facilitate preparedness and response to the disaster and its effects on communities. While not caused by weather or atmospheric factors, mega tsunamis are accompanies by conditions that relate to earth science concepts. Mega tsunamis cause violent winds and sudden changes in atmospheric pressure that increases the extent of their destructive forces on communities (Pal et al., 2023). Mega tsunami waves are accompanies by heavy rains and storms that could affect emergency response efforts for people in flooded areas. The snowballing effects include the significant flooding of coastal areas leading to damages on critical infrastructure, homes, and buildings. Depending on the extent to which waves have entered inland, economic and social implications could have years of effects on the people in the affected regions. Climate change has exposed more populated areas to mega tsunamis as ocean waters rise in vulnerable areas. A mega tsunami whose waves enter miles inland could have an increasingly greater impact as more cities come within range of the events. Regions of Focus The regions of focus for the disaster response and preparedness plan are the coastal communities of the United States bordering the Pacific Ocean. [City, State], and Alaska are the regions in the country are likely to experience a mega tsunami within the next 500 years. While there have been mega tsunamis confined to smaller areas such as Lituya Bay and the Vajont Dam on Monte Toc in Italy, the effects of a mega tsunami on the American coastline could be more devastating (QuakeAlerts, 2025). The choice...
