Preventing Handgun Violence: Insights from the Brady Act

Abstract

Week 9 Pivotal Document: The Brandy Handgun Violence Prevention Act Week 9 mass shooting of choice was Sandy Hook Elementary school shooting which came about after consideration of the readings on gun rights and how these rights makes gun affect the society at large (Schildkraut pgs 183-228). Based on the reading, gun rights have allowed many American have access to guns and their use is over 2.5 million times an year for self protection with over 60% of Americans supporting ban on handguns for people less than 21years among other bans like for mentally unstable, mandatory licensing of gun buyers and the need for background checks. Such demands lead to the need for analysis of the Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act to understand what it says about such rights and measures to put in place. The Brandy Handgun Violence Prevention Act, is a pivotal document often referred to in discussions about gun control legislation which aligns with this week’s readings (Pg, 234). It is a document significant in the broader context of efforts to address firearm-related violence in the United States especially with regard to the increasing school shootings. Brandy Handgun Violence Prevention Act emerged from rising concerns about gun violence, particularly incidents involving handguns which reflect a growing public and legislative awareness of the need for stricter gun control measures. Such handgun use is well reflected in the weekly video “The heroes of San Bernardino” where employees had gathered for a training lesson but at 10: 53 one employee left the room and shooting began five minutes later (01:55). Such a shooting is a clear reflection of how gun rights have lead many guns into the wrong hands leading to unnecessary injuries and casualties in the long run. The act is named after Brandy, a victim of gun violence, which personalizes the legislative effort and highlights the human cost of firearm-related incidents calling for the need for stricter gun controls to avoid handguns running in the wrong hands. .
