Abstract
It is evident that not all programs are equal in their ability to reduce any specific type of crime, and those that are promising should adapt from the data that is collected in various areas. One specific crime is that of reducing drunk driving by employing random traffic control stops during specific time periods of the day. Sherman et al., (1996) state this type of program worked in Australia, but the data did not show the same result in the United States. This program could be improved by setting up multiple mobile teams that can stop at any given location and give breathalyzers to motorists. By not remaining in the same area too long it does not provide the community to spread the word of the location of the police conducting these tests. Having multiple teams out at the same time in known separate high traffic points would provide a better deterrence of drunk driving. Another promising program that could be improved is that of an in-place program such as metal detectors at schools. These detectors will be able to provide a quick fix to students who bring in any type of weapon but do not confront the other aspects of school violence. The addition of extra resource officers that are on the ground will allow for a quicker reaction time to any type of violence that takes place such as typical fights, and those that involve some sort of weapon found in the school such as a chair. Sherman et al., (1996) state that schools that promote an environment that provides training and coaching of thinking skills help reduce or prevent crime by using behavioral modification techniques. This type of program is promising only if the rewards and punishments for actions are equal across the board for all students,...
