A common argument against abortion is that fetuses are people from conception, making it illegal. Abortion is dangerous, but miscarriage—which ends 89% of pregnancies—is far more deadly. This indicates that, if pro-lifers are correct, miscarriage is our time's most significant public health emergency. Yet they give miscarriage very little thought, especially very early loss. The difficulty of preventing miscarriage or the distinction between murdering and letting die has not been successful in resolving this contradiction, leaving us with a problem. Those who oppose abortion should either push for a significant change in our nation's political and medical priorities or abandon the idea that fetuses have inherent rights and human dignity from conception.
